YOUTUBE
I must admit I’ve only ever gone to YouTube when someone has sent me a silly video of cats or animals doing crazy/cute things but searching further I realized there was a lot of information on it that wasn’t just JUNK. I downloaded three YouTube videos that I like: Blonde @ Library because if short but funny, Library Dominoes because it’s something you really shouldn’t do in the library and it would certainly be frowned upon and ‘Teenage Song’ because it’s almost like they filmed my own son! I think it sums up teenage boys and I laugh every time I see this clip. (Wasn’t sure how to reduce the size though in my blog even though I tried changing the sizes in my html tab – anyone know how?)
I searched for historical events such as Barack Obama’s first speech as President of USA and in ‘Moments in history’ search I found the fall of the Berlin Wall. I also searched for Brown Eyes Blue Eyes which is an experiment carried out by Jane Elliott in 1984 on racism. It was a sequel to an experiment she carried out in the 50’s or 60’s in her local school which turned the whole town against her. I also did a search for ‘book authors’ which produced quite a few videos of authors being interviewed. I think these type of videos could used in a school library and be a very useful tool in the curriculum as students can not only read about history and world events but watch them, which brings the issues to life more. The world is certainly at the finger tips of students today. It is amazing to see how many times these videos have been viewed and how many items are there to view. I was astounded that I was able to view old TV commercials such as Aeroplane Jelly from 1956.
PODCASTS
I managed to find a few podcasts to download but I was having a couple of technical issues with my computer so I haven’t managed to actually download one successfully, however, I now know some great tips on how to search for them and I think, now I own an ipod nano, that I will use this service. It’s a great way of catching up on shows/programs you may have missed and playing them while you’re taking the dog for a walk (thus getting exercise as well as being IT savy).
AUDIO BOOKS
I had a look around the sites suggested but a lot of links weren’t working. I managed to access the NetLibrary but was disappointed that I couldn’t see how much it cost to download a book or subscribe and I found the site a little confusing, so I went to google and typed in ‘free audiobooks’ and came up with a great site called ‘BooksShouldBeFree.com’ http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/. There were lots of topics there to choose from so I managed to download the book ‘The Return of Sherlock Holmes’ even if it did take 3hrs. (Luv a good Sherlock Holmes mystery). Can’t wait to listen to it.

I loved "Sort of, dunno, nothing" too when I discovered it. I remember it being standard communication with male teenagers and pre-teens when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my sons are not quite that reticent to converse it is reassuring to see that the behaviour is common enough to generate recognition in popular culture (if not in ex-spouses determined to find fault).
